Intel said the Itanium offers a 12-fold performance improvement over today’s 32-bit designs. Its “Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing”(EPIC) technology allows it to handle parallel processing other than previous designs, most of which were designed 10 to 20 years ago.
The technology reduces hardware complexity to better modify processor speed upgrades. Itanium processors consist of “massive chip execution resources” that permit “breakthrough capabilities in processing terabytes of data”. Itanium is the 1st processor to use EPIC (Explicit Parallel Instruction Computing) design. Moreover, Its performance has to be better than the present day Reduced Instruction Set Computing and complex Instruction Set Computing (RISC & CISC).
One of the main features of Itanium is its use of a “smart compiler” to optimize how instructions are sent to the processor. Moreover This approach permits Itanium and future IA-64 microprocessors to process more instructions per clock cycle.
Itanium is viewed by Intel and industry observers as a new level of hardware platform for the UNIX system and Windows server market. Also for the high-end pc workstation market with its memory- and graphics- technical, intensive scientific and high-end graphics applications. Observers say that Itanium-based servers are particularly suited for today’s massive enterprise computing environments with information warehouses and a requirement for intensive processing for complicated queries and transactions.
