We all know about SEO and SMO. Now a days, these are important for improving sites visibility. Now let us have a look at SMO. Social Media Optimization (SMO) is the process to generate publicity to increase awareness of a product, brand or event through social media outlets and communities. Important social media sites are RSS feeds, social news and bookmarking sites, and social networking sites such as Twitter, and video and blogging sites. SMO is much similar to SEO. The goal of both is to generate traffic and improve the sites visibility. Generally, social media optimization refers to optimizing a website by sharing it across social media and networking sites.
Now let us look at the relationship between SMO and SEO.
Now a day, social media optimization is an important part of search engine optimization. Because search engines increasingly utilize the recommendations of users of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+ to rank pages in search engine result pages. When a webpage is “liked” by a user, it counts as a vote for that webpage. The search engine uses this vote for ranking the websites in search engine result pages.
Even though both aims at generating website traffic, these are quite different. SEO targets at certain keywords. It also takes into consideration how search engine works, what people search for, the keywords that are typed into search engine, and the targeted audience of the search engine. SEO can be used for image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search, and industry specific vertical search engines.
The purpose of SMO
The purpose of SMO is also to increase traffic to a website. Using SMO on a website the content can be optimized so that the content from the site should easily shareable on social media. This can be achieved by incorporating widget, social media buttons, etc. It is also considered as an integral part of online reputation management; or search engine reputation management for organizations; or individuals who care about their online presence.
