Is your website is with ads-heavy pages?

Whether your website visitors struggle to find the actual content on your web pages? Google ads is looking at penalizing ad heavy sites that make it difficult for people to find good content on web pages, Matt Cutts, head of Google’s web spam team said.  Cutts said Google is testing algorithms that determine “what are the things that really matter, how much content is above the fold.”

Speaking at PubCon, Cutts warned that if these ads are obscuring your content, you have to rethink about it. If a visitor is having a tough time in viewing the actual content of your website, the whole website may be flagged as spam.
Google has been updating its Algorithms over the past couple months in their different Panda updates. It was as a part of commitment to return high quality websites to their users, Google says.

Panda 2.5, a series of Panda algorithm and site recalculation updates over several weeks. Panda is a site-wide assessment and the main key recovery strategies are found to be:

Containing valuable website content

  • Avoiding duplicate content appearing on other websites
  • Avoiding pages on website about same topic
  • Providing easy navigation to users
  • Building a website people want to return

After looking at various websites, Panda penalized during the initial calculation. Google dropped the page rankings of certain websites with lot of ads beyond a certain limit or “above the fold”. Since browser sizes are varying, Google Adsense had suggested placing the ads above fold. This is due to the fact that ads placed above the fold tend to perform better than those below the fold.

So, beware; many websites have already been marked as spam due to excessive ads. Matt Cutts added that he, with the help of web spam experts are looking keenly into the problem sites.
